PARMA, Ohio (AP) -- A school district in the inner ring of Cleveland suburbs has decided to fire 50 teachers after voters overwhelmingly rejected a $13.6 million levy to help cover operating expenses.

Parma's school board approved the layoffs on Monday. The levy, which failed last week, is the third straight school levy turned down by voters.

The campaign was overshadowed by an FBI probe into deals approved by one of the district's board members, who resigned in March.

Parma Board President Cyndee Bratz said the layoffs are devastating. Plans to close two schools also are in the works.

Parma is in Cuyahoga County, where four other school levies passed.

January brought some frigid (at least for D.C.) weather to the nation's capital, and for Redskins fans the end of a long, miserable losing season. But sports fans can still catch one of the nation's hottest teams even in the coldest of weather.
