THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Fourteen lawyers have applied for the two judgeships in Franklin County Common Pleas Court that become available Monday.

The vacancies were created in November when Common Pleas Judges Eric Brown and John A. Connor were elected to the Probate Court and Franklin County Court of Appeals, respectively.

Gov. Ted Strickland will fill the vacancies, but not immediately, spokeswoman Amanda Wurst said.

The Ohio Supreme Court has appointed Dale A. Crawford and Alan C. Travis to fill in until Strickland acts. Both are retired Common Pleas judges from Franklin County.

Strickland will take recommendations from the Ohio Judicial Appointments Recommendation Panel, a bipartisan committee that he created in January 2007 to screen applicants.

Among the applicants are political newcomers:

• Laurel A. Beatty, 34, daughter of former state Reps. Otto Beatty Jr. and Joyce Beatty. She is director of legislative affairs for the Ohio secretary of state, has worked at three law firms and has served as a hearing officer for the city of Columbus on the Equal Business Opportunity Commission and the Red Light Photo Enforcement System.

• Frederick L. Berkemer, 60, a former Columbus assistant city attorney who is in private practice in Columbus with 30 years experience. He is the son of a former Franklin County sheriff.

• Kristen J. Brown, 45, chief legal counsel to the Office of the Ohio Insurance Liquidator in the Ohio Department of Insurance. She is a former in-house counsel for Columbia Gas and litigator with the Columbus law firm Squire Sanders.

• Kimberly Cocroft, 35, former Ohio Supreme Court law clerk and current deputy legal counsel to Strickland.

• Michael C. McPhillips, 48, a former Common Pleas magistrate now serving as chief of the employment law section of the Ohio Attorney General's Office.

And those who have run before:

• Charles Bendig, 58, in private practice in Columbus with 25 years experience. He ran unsuccessfully for the Common Pleas court in 2006.

• Danielle R. Blue, 31, with the Columbus firm Gallagher, Gams, Pryor, Tallan & Littrell. She has six years experience and last year ran unsuccessfully for the Ohio Senate in the 16th District.

• Richard D. Brown, 52, partner in the Columbus office of Buckley King with 27 years experience. He last ran unsuccessfully for the Franklin County Court of Appeals.

• Walter H. Gerhardstein, 61, in private practice in Columbus with 30 years experience. He is chief precinct judge for the Franklin County Board of Elections and former chief legal counsel for the Ohio Department of Human Services. He ran unsuccessfully for Common Pleas judge in 1996.
